Abstract

The purpose of this research was to make the comparative histological evaluation of uterus and ovaries of nulliparous and multiparous cats and others submitted to hormonal treatment with progesterone. Ten samples of right and left uterine horns and ovaries for each group had been used for this end. The material collected soon after surgery, was processed routinely, stained with haematoxylin and eosin and examined to the light microscope. The uterus of nulliparous cats presented thin endometrium with discrete longitudinal folds coated by cubical simple epithelium. The glands were discrete, in small number and reduced diameter, formed for low cubical or cylindrical epithelium. However in multiparous cats, the endometrium was plaited, irregular and thick, coated for cylindrical simple epithelium with vacuolated cells, some cases, with dilated glands formed for flattened epithelium, the same occurring for the ones treated, that beyond endometrial reduction and branched, presented innumerable high projections and richly ramified coated by cubical and cylindrical simple epithelium with vacuolated cells. The glands of reduced diameter were formed for cubical or cylindrical simple epithelium and the dilated glands show secretion and cystic appearance. The myometrial layers in nulliparous cats were regular with great amount of blood vessels of great diameter between the layers, in contrast of multiparous, where in some cases, dilated blood vessels with thick wall had been presented in the thick and irregular myometrial tunics. In the most representative cases of the ones treated with hormone, it did not have distinction between the two layers, with presence of extensive area of connective tissue larded the groups of muscular staple fibers. The ovaries for all the groups were coated by cubical simple epithelium, with dense albuginea layer formed of dense connective tissue and great amount of primordial, primary, in growth, mature follicles and in regression. In the two first groups, was evidenced presence of polyovular preantral and antral follicles. Atretic corpora lutea and others of great diameter were evidences, some with vacuolated cells for the multiparous and treated cats. In the medullar zone, was observed great amount of dilated blood and lymphatic vessels. KEYWORDS: Histology. Uterus. Ovaries. Progesterone. Cat female.
