Abstract

The present study evaluated the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant enterobacteria in wild white-eyed parakeets (Psittacara leucophthalmus) inhabiting the metropolitan region of Sorocaba. Cloacal swabs were collected from 30 parakeets, rescued and directed to the Municipal Zoological Park "Quinzinho de Barros" in Sorocaba, SP. Bacterial culture of the biological samples was performed for the identification of enterobacteria using selective media for gram-negative bacteria and laboratory biochemical tests. It was possible to observe that the majority of parakeets had enterobacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, with Escherichia coli being the most frequent bacterium. Among the tested antibiotics, chloramphenicol showed the highest bacterial sensitivity.
