Abstract

This review summarizes the basic concepts, history and main veterinary acupuncture techniques, including pharmacopuncture. Data selection was subjective according to its relevance. Acupuncture is an ancient medicine that uses needles to stimulate specific areas of the body and arouse homeostatic mechanisms. Veterinary acupuncture is also antique even though its use in Brazil started effectively only in middle 1980’s. Scientific research shows that acupoints and acupuncture channels are differentiated areas of the skin.  There are several methods for acupoint stimulation including acupressure, dry needle, injection, electroacupuncture and implants.  Pharmacopuncture, the injection of drugs into acupoints, is an incipient technique that is becoming very useful in veterinary acupuncture.

KEY-WORDS: Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Acupoint. Acupuncture Channels. Pharmacopncture.
