Abstract

This study aimed at identifying the species of Strongyloides that parasite two neotropical species of wild birds: the undulated tinamous (Crypturellus undulatus) and the small-billed tinamous (Cypturellus parvirostris). Fifteen adult birds of both species, captured in Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo States, were euthanased and submitted to post-mortem examination for helminthological search. The worms obtained from the gastrointestinal contents and intestinal mucosa were identified and counted for elaboration of helminth infection descriptors: prevalence, mean intensity, intensity, and abundance. A total of 205 worms were collected and identified as either Strongyloides avium in small-billed tinamous or Strongyloides oswaldoi in undulated tinamous, with prevalence of 6.6% and 53.0%, respectively.
