ENDOMETRIAL RESPONSE OF MARES SUBMITTED TO INTRA-UTERINE INFUSION WITH KEROSENE AND POVIDONE IODINE.

Abstract

This experiment was designed to evaluate the endometrial response of mares submitted to intra-uterine infusion of kerosene and povidone iodine (PVPI). Thirty-six mixed breeds mares were divided in 3 groups. Group 1 received 50 ml of intra-uterine infusion with undiluted commercial kerosene; group 2, 50 ml of 10% solution of PVPI and group 3, 50 ml of 5% glucose solution. Fragments of endometrial tissue were removed from each mare for endometrial biopsy at days 0 (just before treatments), day 1, 7 and 30 (after treatments). Histological evaluation disclosed that the endometria were ranked subjectively into scores according to each variable considered. These data were subjected to analysis of variance and showed a greater (p<0.05) degree of inflammation in the kerosene group at 24 h post-treatment 71.87%) than PVPI and glucose (47.92% and 40.00%, respectively). There was also a more severe neutrophilic infiltration (p<0.05) in the stratum compactum in the kerosene group at 24 h post-treatment (75.00%) than PVPI and glucose (47.92% and 42.50%, respectively). In these two variables there was a faster recovery time for the group that received kerosene. The presence of neutrophils in the stratum spongiosum and lymphocytes in the stractum compactum varied over time (p<0.05) but not between treatments, indicating an inespecific temporal variation. The other variables examined did not show variation between treatments nor over time. It can be concluded that intra-uterine kerosene infusion caused a more acute inflammatory response in the superficial layers of the endometrium and a faster histological recovery than 10% solution of PVPI.
